Revitalizing Watebury Vermont - Miracles Happen

The Work

Revitalizing Waterbury is committed to projects, events and activities that collectively contribute to preserving and enhancing the vitality of downtown Waterbury. Our ‘Main Street’ has a rich history, an authenticity and tremendous assets. Our revitalization effort aims to capitalize on downtown Waterbury’s unique qualities and create appropriate, positive changes. Our work is fueled by people power, citizens who simply believe in downtown Waterbury.

We’re in it for the long haul

Revitalizing Waterbury has learned that revitalization doesn’t happen overnight and that the process has no end. Our work is a mix of small and large undertakings, tangible results and subtle changes, and strategic planning and implementation. RW’s four committees, board of directors and staff work in concert. RW’s committees – Design, Economic Development, Marketing and Promotion and Organization – each develop an annual work plan and budget. Our work is often enhanced by joining forces with other local organizations and the Town and Village of Waterbury.

Downtown Designation

RW significantly contributed to Waterbury’s successful application in 2006 to become Vermont’s 22nd designated downtown. This status makes downtown Waterbury eligible for a number of benefits to property owners, business owners and the downtown at large. Similar to other Vermont downtown organizations, RW’s structure and strategy is modeled after the National Main Street Center’s Four-Point Approach to revitalization. In 2011 RW will collaborate with the Town of Waterbury to renew downtown designation. The State Downtown Board will review Waterbury's renewal application in November 2011.

Bricks & Mortar Projects

The restoration of the Stimson & Graves Block and the Waterbury Railroad Station were two large scale projects undertaken by RW. Our goal was to preserve these historically significant buildings and create spaces in the downtown for economic development, affordable housing and community activities. These two bricks and mortar projects have contributed to downtown Waterbury’s inviting atmosphere and serve as examples of what can be accomplished by a community and extraordinary private-public partnerships.
